MANKATO, Minn. —On a celebratory Friday night in which Bethany Lutheran (13-6 overall, 8-0 UMAC) dropped its 2020-21 UMAC regular season and conference tournament championship banners, the Vikings rolled to a 94-51 victory over Martin Luther (5-13, 2-6).
The win marked BLC's 14th straight over its rival, as it took the season series two games to none.
Bethany began the game strong defensively, holding MLC to 2-20 shooting from the floor in the first frame, including 0-for its first 11.
Freshman Haley Meyer (Centerville, S.D.) had 10 points in the opening session, leading the Vikings to a 22-5 lead after one.
BLC expanded its margin in the second quarter with the help of a trio of three-pointers by junior Ashley Schindele (Kimball, Minn.). The Vikings doubled up the Knights 44-22 going into the intermission.
Bethany dominated the three-point shooting battle in the first half, hitting on 7-14 of its threes while holding the Knights to 0-12 from outside the arc.
The Vikings came out firing on all cylinders in the second half, scoring 30 on MLC in the third quarter alone en route to their second largest margin of victory this season.
BLC shot 20-34 overall from the field in the second half, finishing the contest at 50% (34-68).
Bethany held large advantages in points in transition (21-6) and in the paint (42-30).
Senior Hanna Geistfeld (Truman, Minn.) led the Vikings with 22 points, 12 of which came in the third quarter, and eight rebounds in the contest.
Meyer and Schindele both recorded career highs with 20 and 15 points, respectively. Schindele also connected on a career-high five triples.
Freshman Alexis Cloyd (Garden City, Minn.) scored 18 points to go along with a game-high six assists.
Sophomore Abby Nelson (Redwood Falls, Minn.) had eight points, all in the fourth quarter.
Bethany continues its homestand next Friday night against Northland College at 5:30 p.m.
