ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Bethany men's soccer team was able to hold off Northwestern Saturday afternoon as they took home a 1-0 victory. With the win the Vikings move to 6-2-2- overall and 4-1 in the conference while the Eagles fall to 4-5 overall and 3-2 in UMAC play.
"I was really proud of our effort defensively tonight as we didn't really give them any good looks at goal," said Head Coach Derick Lyngholm. "Offensively, we moved the ball extremely well, with Bernando and Tomas Abreu doing a great job in the middle for us. We had a lot of good opportunities but they played solid defensively. At the end of the day it's a hard fought victory and it's nice to get the shutout."
This one started off slow, with each team able to muster a few shots on goal in the first 30 minutes. After a few Northwestern fouls and Bethany starting to gain control, they finally took their chance and were able to net the game winner. An errant clearance by the Eagles gave the Vikings an opening as Jamie Smith found Antonio Lima who found the back of the net for the fifth straight game to give the Vikings a 1-0 lead in the 40th minute.Â
After halftime, Bethany would dominate possession and control the action for a majority of the time. Northwestern would fire a few shots on net, but Nick Lundberg would fend them off as the Vikings were able to cruise to a 1-0 victory.Â
Lundberg made four saves in net as he moved to 3-1-0 on the year.
The Vikings are back in action when they host Bethel Monday at 7 p.m.
