MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The Bethany women's basketball team Saturday fell behind Calvin early before rallying late to send the game to overtime, where the Knights were able to take a 79-74 victory. With the win Calvin moves to 2-0 while the Vikings fall to 0-3.
In the first half of this one, the game seemed to be heavily favoring the Knights. Calvin employed a 6-3 post down low who was able to disrupt the Vikings defensively while making a difference on the offensive end as well, scoring 12 points in the first 20 minutes of play. Bethany trailed by 15 with five minutes remaining in the first half, but were able to cut the deficit to 31-20 headed into the halftime break.
It wasn't until the third quarter that Bethany started clicking. The Knight offense was on a roll as well, scoring 20 points which was the most they scored in any quarter, but Bethany put up 28 on 8-of-12 shooting from the field, 4-of-5 from deep, and 8-of-9 from the free throw line. Ashley Schindele and Haley Meyer keyed the run for the Vikings scoring nine and seven points in the quarter, respectively.
Trailing 50-47 entering the final quarter of play, the Vikings were able to pull ahead in the early going after Ashanti Boykin and Kaylee Hunter scored four points each to key an 8-2 run and put them ahead 55-52 with four minutes to play. Both teams then got into foul trouble late, trading free throws and buckets, with a Schindele three giving Bethany a one point lead with 46 seconds to play. The Knights were sent to the free throw line with 40 seconds left and made the first before missing the second, however, they were able to get their own rebound. They were fouled again and made both with 28 seconds to play before Hunter was fouled on the other end and sent to the line. She would make both with 11 seconds to play and the last second shot attempt by Calvin didn't fall as the teams went to overtime.
In the OT period, Hunter would hit a three to start it off before Calvin answered with a pair of scores. Taryn Chistensen would head to the free throw line and make both on the ensuing possession but it would be the last time the Vikings would see the lead. The Knights would go on a 9-1 run late to push to an eight point lead, and even though Bethany cut the deficit to four they couldn't finish the comeback.
Schindele led the team with 23 points, while Meyer finished with 16. Christensen added 11 and a team-high seven rebounds, while Hunter poured in 14 off the bench.
The Vikings are next in action on Tuesday when they head to UW-Stout for a 7 p.m. matchup.
