Women's Soccer Loses Heartbreaker to Eagles to End Season

Box Score ROSEVILLE, Minn. - Trailing by one with 14 seconds remaining, the Bethany Lutheran women's soccer team had a penalty kick opportunity but the Northwestern keeper made a diving save to send the Eagles to the UMAC Championship thanks to a 1-0 victory.

The game played back and forth early in this one as the two teams traded shots and corner kicks in the first 20 minutes. Northwestern started to gain more possession and get better chances and it paid off in the 29th minute when Haley Mersberger scored in the 29th minute to put the Eagles up 1-0. The Eagles would continue to hold possession for a large part of the first half as they held the Vikings without a shot the last 25 minutes.

In the second half, Northwestern continued to hold a large portion of the possession and stop the Vikings from any real attacking opportunities. Bethany was able to get a few shots off midway through but not able to gain a lot of momentum and it seemed like the Eagles were going to hold on without any hiccups late. That all changed with 14 seconds left when UNW was called for a handball in the box awarding the Vikings a penalty kick. Juana Quevedo was the one to take it and took a line drive shot to the bottom right corner but Eagle keeper Reagan Flaschberger dove the right direction and was able to punch it away as they held on for a 1-0 victory.

Brooke Wolanin got the start in net and allowed one goal while making six saves.

With the loss, the Vikings end the season at 11-7-1 overall.
