SUPERIOR, Wis. - The Bethany Lutheran men's soccer team ended their season on Saturday afternoon with a 3-0 loss to UW-Superior. The Vikings finish the season 15-4-3 overall while the Yellowjackets improved to 16-3-2.
On a cold, rainy, and windy day, miscues were what cost the Vikings as the Yellowjackets played a solid game and took advantage of Bethany mistakes in the early going. The first UW-Superior goal came after the visitors were trying to clear the ball following a UWS shot. A miscommunication and mistouch though would give Superior an easy punch in goal for the early 1-0 lead. The Yellowjackets would then find another in the 21st minute after a midfielder Freddy Watson was able to dribble through the Viking defense and play a low through ball in to Blake Perry who had a one on one with Nick Lundberg and knocked it past him for a 2-0 lead. The third goal of the half was off a Superior throw in where a few Bethany players had an opportunity to clear the ball but it ended up being popped up in front of the net and a Yellowjacket was there to head it home for a 3-0 lead heading into the half.
The Vikings had an advantage though for a large portion of the second half as a Superior red card gave Bethany a one man advantage. Bethany would get a few shots on during this time, but a red card on the Vikings in the 75th minute would then make play 10-on-10 for the remaining 15 minutes. Playing with a sense of urgency, Bethany would apply pressure late and fire a handful of shots off, but the Yellowjackets would hold on for the 3-0 shutout victory.
Lundberg got the start in net and made four saves while allowing the three goals.
