Vikings Split Saturday

MANKATO, Minn. -- The Bethany Lutheran baseball team (4-7 overall) split the double header against Buena Vista (8-6) Saturday afternoon at ISG Field. Both games played were nine innings in length.

Senior Brody Curtiss (Belle Plaine, Minn.) tossed a complete game in the opener en route to earning his first win of the season. He allowed only one extra-base hit and struck out six in the contest.

The Vikings wasted no time scoring runs, as they plated one on an RBI single from junior Liam Peterson (Port Orchard, Wash.) and another on a wild pitch in the first inning. Bethany tallied one in both the second and third innings to cushion its lead.

Peterson finished with two hits in the game with one RBI, a run scored and a triple. Senior Ross Buemer (Northfield, Minn.) also tripled and recorded an RBI as he went 2-2.

This was the third win in the all-time series for the Vikings, and marked the first victory since March 30, 2010.

BLC got on the board early in the second game following a leadoff single by freshman Malachi Santiago (Gilbert, Ariz.). He stole third and came around to score on an RBI groundout from Peterson.

Freshman Gavin Jacobsen (Jackson, Minn.) started game two and threw a pair of scoreless innings before the Beavers offense came to life. Between the third through the sixth innings, the Beavers scored seven to take a 7-1 lead.

Two triples in the home half of the sixth inning from Peterson and senior Jake LaBerge (Round Rock, Tex.) helped Bethany plate three to make it 7-4, but BV tacked on three of its own in the seventh inning.

Junior Ben Hopper (North Mankato, Minn.) hit an RBI single to left in the seventh to account for Bethany's final run of the afternoon.

LaBerge went 3-4 in the game, and Peterson had two hits to bring his total to four on the day.

The Vikings continue their homestand next Saturday for a doubleheader versus Macalester College. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
