Box Score 1 MINNEAPOLIS – The Bethany Lutheran baseball team (1-0 overall) won the season opener against St. John's (2-1) early Wednesday morning, 8-6 in nine innings. This was the first win over the Johnnies since 2010.
St. John's tallied the first runs in the bottom of the second, and added two more in the fifth.
In the sixth, junior Vaughn Pouncy (St. Paul) drove in seniors Hunter Pearce (Berthoud, Colo.) and Brent Fowler (Berthoud, Colo.) scored on a bases loaded walk to make it 4-2.
The Johnnies added one in the sixth on an RBI single to make it 5-2.
The Vikings added three in the seventh on an RBI double from Jake LaBerge (Round Rock, Texas), and a two-run single from Pearce knotted the score at five all.
St. John's was retired in order to send the game to extras.
BLC scored three in the ninth to reclaim the lead at 8-5. Pearce had a leadoff triple, scored on Fowler's single, and junior Matt Verdugo (Arvada, Colo.) hit a two-run single.
The Johnnies rallied with one run on an RBI groundout. They had a runner on second with two outs, but the next batter grounded out to seal the win for Bethany.
Pearce went 2-4 with two runs and two RBIs. Pouncy was 2-5, Verdugo was 2-6 and Fowler was 3-5.
The second game of the twinbill was halted in the bottom of the sixth with the Vikings leading 8-2. This game will be resumed at a later date.
BLC returns to the field on its Spring Training trip against Wheaton on Tuesday, March 8.
