MANKATO, Minn. -- The Bethany Lutheran baseball team (5-7 overall 1-0 UMAC) won the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) opener against Martin Luther (0-11, 0-1) 17-0 in seven innings Friday afternoon.

Highlights included:
-a two-run triple from senior Ross Beumer (Northfield, Minn.) in the second inning, and later had a two-run single to shallow centerfield in the fifth.
-Freshman Aidan Russell (Gilbert, Ariz.) had a two-run single and a three-run triple in the fifth inning.
-Senior Jake LaBerge (Round Rock, Texas) had a two-run double in the fifth.

Beumer finished 2-4 with four RBIs. Junior Matt Verdugo (Arvada, Colo.) was 3-4 with a run and an RBI. LaBerge was 2-3 with two runs and two RBIs. Junior Ben Hopper (North Mankato, Minn.) scored three runs. Russell was 2-4 with six RBIs, just one shy of the single-game school record.

Junior Daniel Salinas (St. Paul) pitched six complete innings and fanned six on the day.

The Vikings return to the field tomorrow when they host Minnesota Morris in a doubleheader at 2 p.m.
