Box Score MANKATO, Minn. - The Bethany Lutheran women's soccer team hit the ground running Thursday night at Scheels field, scoring three first half goals en route to a 4-0 victory over Buena Vista in their season opener.
"We're very proud of the girls," said Head Coach Emma Morris, "I think they attacked the gameplan really well and everything we've been working on in preseason they implemented and did a good job on. When you win a game 4-0 it's not just an accident and I think it showed that our combination play is coming on strong in the final third. To be able to get a couple of first years in the goal column along with someone who was away from our team for a year, we couldn't really be more happy."
The Vikings were able to get on the board early, when first year Elena Luján Rubio received a pass from Mia Johnson, turned toward midfield and fired a shot over the keepers head to put the Vikings up 1-0 in the 11th minute. Mia Saulter was then able to add to the lead in the 17th minute after playing a touch pass from Callie Montgomery into the left side of the net. Rubio was then able to add her second goal of the on a breakaway to increase the Viking lead to 3-0 just 34 minutes in.
In the second half, both teams calmed down as the Beavers were able to keep the Vikings at bay until Camryn Baptista received a cross in the 84th minute and fired one into the top right corner for a goal and to seal the 4-0 victory.
Brooke Wolanin got the win in net, making one save in the victory.Â
The Vikings will be back in action on Saturday when they host UW-River Falls for a 4 p.m. contest.Â
