Women's Soccer Earns Draw with Waldorf

Box Score FOREST CITY, Iowa - The Bethany women's soccer team traveled to Waldorf Tuesday night and drew with the Warriors 1-1. With the result the Vikings move to 1-2-1 on the year while Waldorf moves to 1-5-3.

"Obviously we wanted to come away with more than a tie today and we needed to be more clinical in front of net to make that happen," said Head Coach Emma Morris. "It was a pretty evenly matched game and I was proud of our players for staying composed throughout some frustrating moments. We changed strategy at half time and they executed it well. Brooke came up with some great saves in key moments and Elena did what she does best using her technical skill to elude defenders and put one in the back of the net."

Although Waldorf came out and was able to fire the first shot off, it was the Vikings who struck first in this one. Elena Luján Rubio was able to end her two-game scoring drought and find the back of the net for the third time this season in the 22nd minute to give Bethany the early lead. The Vikings held that lead for a large portion of the first half as Brooke Wolanin saved two shots by the Warriors, but the third would find the back of the net to tie the game.

The second half started at pace, with both teams getting multiple shots off early and the Vikings firing multiple on net. As the half progressed, the Warriors started to press an advantage and fire shots on Wolanin, but she stood strong in net and was able to deter them all. The two teams would then play scoreless the rest of the half to end in a 1-1 draw.

Wolanin was solid in net for Bethany, saving five shots while allowing just one goal. The Vikings would also fire five shots on goal with Mia Saulter putting two on net.

"Overall I think we've had a good non-conference season playing against tough opposition while working on a new system," said Morris. "We're ready and looking forward to starting conference season this Saturday with a local rivalry match at home against MLC."

Bethany is next in action Saturday when they host Martin Luther for a 2 p.m. matchup.
