Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Volleyball Falls in Two Matches to Close Out UW-La Crosse Tournament

LA CROSSE, Wisc. - The Bethany volleyball team finished up their weekend at the UW-La Crosse Tournament and dropped a match 3-2 to Simpson before falling to host UW-La Crosse 3-0. With the results the Vikings will move to 2-8 on the season.

Simpson 3 - 2 Bethany Lutheran

The first set started off with a few runs as the Storm jumped out early with three straight before Bethany would take a 4-3 edge. After Simpson scored nine of the next 13 points to take a 13-7 lead, the Vikings would respond with another run of their own to go up 18-15. With the two teams trading points late they would play past the 25 point mark before kills from Riley Sammon and Rilee Hohbein would give Bethany a 32-30 edge and set one.

After a long first set, the Storm would capitalize early in set two as they jumped out to a 18-8 lead to begin the set. Bethany fought back to cut the deficit to five late, but the Storm would take the set 25-19 and even the match. The third set between the two teams was a battle as they played square nearly the whole set. With the scores tied at 19 apiece, the service of Esther Peeters would help the Vikings gain a 24-19 advantage before a Simpson point was followed by a kill from Sarah Strom to give the Vikings set two 25-20.

In the fourth set, the Vikings looked like they may be on their way to victory, as they were able to jump out to a 13-7 lead. The Storm fought back to keep it close before three straight points would give them a 19-18 lead. The two teams then played point for point late and with the Vikings holding onto match point at 24-23, Simpson would rattle off four of the next five points to take the set 27-25. In the fifth and final set, the Storm jumped on the Vikings and never took their foot off the gas. They would take a 6-0 lead and build onto it throughout the final set as they took it 15-6 and won the match 3-2.

Four Vikings notched double digit kills in the match with Hohbein leading the way with 13. Strom and Lex Morsching each added 11 while Lexiss Trygg totaled 10 to go along with 18 set assists. Peeters dished out a team-high 27 assists for the Vikings while Morsching led the team with 23 digs.

UW-La Crosse 3 - 0 Bethany Lutheran

The Eagles and Vikings started the first set back-and-forth with neither team giving much to the other until the Eagles went on a 6-1 run to take a 16-11 lead. Bethany would claw their way back into the set bringing the score to 24-22 in favor of La Crosse but a kill by the host team would end the first set.

In the second set Bethany was able to jump out to an early 6-4 lead before the Eagles went on their run. They would go on a 9-2 run to take a 13-8 lead and would eventually push their lead to 17-11. The two teams would once again trade points near the end of the set before a service error by the Vikings gave the Eagles a 25-20 victory. The third and final set was all La Crosse, as they opened the set on a 17-1 run and although Bethany would score seven of the next 10, the Eagles took a 25-9 victory and won the match 3-0.

Strom, Hohbein and Morsching were all tied for most kills for the Vikings in the second match with five. Trygg led the Vikings with 11 assists and also had a team-best six digs.

After the conclusion of the tournament, an All-Tournament Team was announced and Lex Morsching was selected from the Vikings.

Bethany is back in action Tuesday when they open conferene play against Martin Luther in New Ulm.
