Gustavus Attack Too Much for Vikings

MANKATO, Minn.- The Bethany volleyball team Tuesday hosted No. 14 Gustavus and fell by a score of 3-0. With the loss the Vikings fall to 3-11 overall while the Gusties move to 11-4.

In the first set, Gustavus showed it's strength from start to finish, taking the set 25-8. The Vikings had six kills and nine attacks errors in the first set while the Gusties were perfect with 12 kills and no errors en rout to the set win.

The Vikings would respond in a big way agains the No. 14 team in the country to start set two as they got out to an early 5-1 off the service of Callista Weber. Gustavus would come back and take an 11-9 lead before the Vikings were able to even things at 12. A 10-0 Gustie run though would all but put the second set away as they took it 25-14.

In the final set, Gustavus would jump out to a 15-5 lead before Bethany would slowly climb back to cut the deficit to six at 17-11. Five straight Gustie points pushed their lead back to double digits, but three straight service aces from Paloma Garcia de Fuentes after a Gustavus attacking error would bring the score to 22-15. The visitors though would score three straight points to win the set 25-15 and the match 3-0.

Alexis Morsching led the Viking attack in the match with four kills while Esther Peeters dished out a team-best nine assists. Weber had a strong game in the back row with 12 digs while Lexiss Trygg added a pair of blocks.

The Vikings are next in action on Saturday when they host No. 3 Northwestern for a 5 p.m. contest.
