Volleyball Uses Decisive Fourth Set to Topple Rams

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – After gaining a 2-0 match lead and dropping the third set 25-14, the Bethany Lutheran volleyball team would dominate from start to finish in the fourth winning 25-8 to take the match 3-1. With the win the Vikings improve to 5-11 overall and 2-3 in the UMAC while the Rams fall to 9-5 overall and 1-3 in the conference.

After falling behind 10-4 to start the match, the first set turned completely in the Vikings favor as the Rams could just never get their offense going. NCU would commit 9 attacking errors and four service errors as Bethany claimed a 25-17 set win. The Vikings also had a strong attack in the first set, hitting .269 as a team.

In the second, Bethany jumped out to an 11-3 lead early and never relinquished it. They would extend their lead to 20-11 before the Rams pulled within five late at 23-18. Two more errors from the Rams though closed out the set in favor of the Vikings 25-19.

North Central looked to turn the tide of the match in the third set as they got out to an early 8-3 lead. Bethany would pull within four at 12-8 midway through the set but NCU would roll from there and eventually close out the set at 25-14.

Bethany played their best set of the year in the fourth to close out the Rams, as they had 25 attack attempts in the frame with 16 kills and zero errors to hit .640. Six different Vikings would tally kills in the frame that saw the Vikings defeat the Rams 25-8, with Lexiss Trygg tallying six of those and Ella Blazina four.

Trygg continues her impressive run as she posted 15 kills on a .481 attack percentage and has eclipsed at least 12 kills in her past three matches. Kate Maag has also been in double digit kills over the past three matches as she posted 11 tonight, while Blazina posted a new career high in kills with eight. Paloma Garcia De Fuentes dished out 34 assists for the Vikings in the contest while Maddi Wendland led a quartet of Vikings with double digit digs with 12.

Bethany will next be in action on Friday night when they host UW-Superior at 7 p.m.
