ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Bethany Lutheran women's soccer team Wednesday traveled to Northwestern for a UMAC semifinal matchup and fell to the Eagles by a score of 5-2. With the loss the Vikings will conclude their season at 11-6-2 overall while UNW moves to 12-6-1 and will face off with UW-Superior in the UMAC Championship.
The Eagles got the scoring started just 11 minutes into this one as Haley Mersberger scored her 27
th goal of the season for the home team. The sophomore who sits second in the nation in goals would add to her total in the 43
rd minute as she was able to knock in a goal with time winding down in the half to put UNW up 2-0 at the break.
Northwestern would score just three minutes into the second half to extend their lead to 3-0 before
Asia Jota finally cut into the deficit in the 59
th minute as she scored directly off a corner kick to bring the score to 3-1.
The Eagles would get two more goals in the 69
th and 86
th minute to push their lead to 5-1 before Jota would score another goal on a penalty kick in the 87
th to bring the game to the 5-2 final.
Although they were outscored 5-2, the Vikings outshot Northwestern 29-12 in the contest including 20-7 in the second half and 13-7 in total shots on goal in the game.
