MANKATO, Minn. – The Bethany Lutheran women's basketball team Monday night traveled to Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU) for an exhibition, with the Mustangs claiming the contest 96-52. The exhibition for the Vikings will count as an official contest for SMSU who moves to 2-4 with the win.
In the first quarter, the Mustangs got out to a quick start in what was an efficient first 10 minutes for the home team. SMSU would push out to a 13-2 lead to open the quarter and would shoot 6-of-11 from three in the frame en route to taking a 31-13 lead after 10 minutes.
After SMSU would score the first seven points of the second quarter,
Aubrea Kor would drill a three-pointer to end the drought for the Vikings. The Mustangs would continue to stifle Bethany offensively though, as the visitors shot just 2-of-14 from the field in the second quarter and would trail 49-20 headed to the half.
SMSU would continue their quick starts to quarters in the third, as they would score the first 10 points to lead 59-20 before a
Gianna Klarenbeek basket would end the run. The Mustangs would then once again start to build on their lead and take their biggest lead of the contest at 69-25 with 3:47 to play in the third. The Vikings would then make their first big run of the contest as they outscored SMSU 13-2 in the final 3:30 with six points from
Abby Skorenkyi and were able to cut the lead to 71-38 headed to the fourth.
Kor would open up the fourth quarter with an old fashioned three-point play to bring the score to 71-41 but the Mustangs would outscore the Vikings 25-14 in the quarter to take the win.
Kor had a big night for the Vikings, going 6-of-13 from the field for 18 points while Skorenkyi added 12 points off the bench with a team-high four rebounds.
Bethany will next be in action on Friday when they travel to UW-Eau Claire for a 7 p.m. contest.
