Slow Start Dooms Vikings at Northland

Box Score

ASHLAND, Wis. – The Bethany women's basketball team Friday trailed 38-17 at the half on Friday night and couldn't complete a comeback as they fell to Northland 70-53. With the loss the Vikings fall to 6-14 overall and 4-5 in the UMAC while the LumberJills move to 6-11 overall and 2-7 in conference.

The first five minutes of the contests played even, as the Vikings trailed 11-9 halfway through the first before they went cold. They would go nearly six minutes without a score as Northland tacked on nine more during that span to lead 20-9. The Jills would continue to apply the pressure as they would extend their lead to 27-11 with 6:20 remaining and slowly added to it throughout the quarter, leading 38-17 headed into halftime.

Bethany once again started slow in the third with Northland scoring nine of the first 13 points in the quarter to hold a 46-21 lead before Skylar Cotten three gave the Vikings some life. The three started a 9-0 run for the Vikings to cut the deficit to 16, but Northland would quickly counter and re-extend their lead to 22 as the teams entered the final quarter of play. In the fourth, Bethany would get a pair of three from Ashley Schindele to start the frame, but they couldn't keep their momentum rolling as Northland was able to hold them at bay for the victory.

Trygg led the offense for the Vikings in this one with 13 points, while Kaylee Hunter added 12 off the bench.

Bethany will be back in action tomorrow when they take on UW-Superior at 4:45 p.m.
