STORM LAKE, Iowa – The Bethany Lutheran women's soccer team got things off on the right foot on Friday night, taking a 2-0 victory over Buena Vista thanks to a pair of second half goals. With the win the Vikings begin the season 1-0 while the Beavers fall to 0-1.
"A good result to start the season," said Head Coach Emma Morris. "Defensively we were solid,
Juana [Quevedo] did a great job leading the defensive unit to a shutout and realistically our GK's didn't have a lot on their plate which is a testament to the 10 in front of them. On the attack we weren't quite connecting but we were dominant. Finally it came together and we got a couple of nice opportunities that we finished well."
Coach Morris had to be pleased with her team's possession in the first half, as they were able to control the flow for a majority of the first 45 minutes. The Vikings however, couldn't squeeze one into the back of the net. They would put three shots on goal from the 33
rd to 37
th minute, but none would sneak by the BVU keeper as the teams headed to the half tied at zero.
Bethany would continue to pepper shots on net in the second half with
Asia Jota getting a great chance in the 57
th minute when she hit the crossbar, but the Beavers would eventually clear it and keep the game scoreless.
Elena Luján Rubio made sure it didn't stay scoreless long, as she took a pass from
Mia Saulter and was able to evade the Beaver goalkeeper on a one-on-one for a tap in goal to make the score 1-0.
It was just five minutes later, that Lujan Rubio almost found the back of the net again off a Jota corner, when her shot hit off the right post and bounced in front of the net. In the chaos, Saulter, who originally was just playing decoy and trying to obstruct the BVU keeper, was able to punch in the loose ball to make the score 2-0.
From there on out the Vikings and Beavers would play scoreless as Bethany claimed the 2-0 victory.
Brooke Wolanin got the win in net for the Vikings making one save, with
Arayah Baker made one save after coming on for the last 15 minutes.
"Overall a good win to start the season and now we'll look to recover and be ready for Sunday's contest," said Morris.
Bethany will be back in action on Sunday night as they play UW-River Falls at 7 p.m.
