Jota's Goal Leads Vikings to Win Over Knights

Box Score NEW ULM, Minn. – The Bethany Lutheran women's soccer team traveled to Martin Luther College on Tuesday afternoon and came away from the match with a 1-0 win. With the victory the Vikings move to 4-2-1 overall and 3-0 in the UMAC while the Knights fall to 1-5-1 overall and 0-2-1 in the conference.

Bethany came out of the gates firing in this one, as they put four shots on net in the first nine minutes. The MLC keeper saved the first four, but the fifth team shot that came from Asia Jota in the ninth minute found the back of the net. The senior midfielder took a loose ball and fired it left footed from well outside the box, just over the outstretched arms of the Knights goalie to put the first score on the board.

The Vikings kept the pressure on in the first half, firing five more shots on net and multiple just off target but none found their mark as the score was 1-0 at the break.

To start the second half Bethany took three corner kicks in the first five minutes but none were successful as the Knights kept the game within one. Following the corners, the Vikings held possession in their offensive zone for a majority of the contest but couldn't find the back of the net. They fired off 13 shots in the second half while allowing just three total by MLC, with Brooke Wolanin saving the only shot the Knights put on net.

Wolanin made two total saves in the contest for the clean sheet victory.

The Vikings will next be in action on Saturday when they travel to UW-Superior for a 4:30 p.m. contest.
