Vikings Drop Back and Forth Battle with Oles

Box Score NORTHFIELD, Minn. - The Bethany Lutheran women's basketball team Tuesday night traveled to St. Olaf and fell by a score of 79-67. With the loss the Vikings fall to 1-5 while the Oles move to 5-1.

It was a fast start for the Oles, who would get four finishes inside on their first four possession for the early 8-2 lead. Bethany would respond by going on an 8-2 run of their own with Juliana Ewald tallying four points as the game would be even at 10 midway through the first. Over the last five minutes it was Amelia Walker who would propel Bethany as she would score six points to spur an 11-7 run and the Vikings would lead 21-17 after one quarter.

The second quarter proved to be all Oles, as they would hold Bethany to 4-of-14 shooting in the quarter while shooting 8-of-17 to outscore the visitors 21-9. St. Olaf would score the first nine points of the quarter to lead by five with seven minutes to play before the Vikings matched a few Ole baskets to make the score 31-25 midway through the frame. St. Olaf would score the next four points to push their lead to 10 but a Gianna Klarenbeek three late would help Bethany cut the deficit to 38-30 headed to the break.

St. Olaf would get out of the gates quickly in the third quarter with a 9-1 run to start the quarter as they led 47-31 with eight minutes to go. Klarenbeek would then put her mark on the game, shaking off a cold start from the field and posting a third quarter stat line that could constitute as a game's worth of stats. The sophomore posted 10 points, four rebounds, three assists, a steal, and a block in a seven minute span in the third quarter that saw Bethany outscore St. Olaf 21-8 and cut the deficit to 55-52 headed to the fourth.

A Kaylee Hunter three pointer two and a half minutes into the fourth would bring the St. Olaf lead to one point at 58-57 before the Oles answered with seven straight to go up 65-57. Walker would then finish on a layup before Maria Beatriz Ferreira would score her first collegiate points in a big spot with a corner three to make it a one possession game. The last four minutes favored St. Olaf though as they would go on a 10-1 run to salt the game away before claiming the 79-67 victory.

Klarenbeek and Ewald led the way in this one with 14 points each, while Walker and Arinn McGee each added eight points off the bench.

The Vikings will next be in action on Saturday when they will travel to Division II Southwest Minnesota State for a 4 p.m. contest.
