Baseball Posts Strong Showing in Win Over Crown

ST. BONIFACIOUS, Minn. - The Bethany Lutheran baseball team stayed undefeated in the UMAC with a 14-1 win over Crown on Friday afternoon with a dominant all-around effort. With the win the Vikings move to 12-7 overall and 10-0 in the conference while the Polars fall to 6-13 overall and 4-3 in the UMAC.

Bethany would open the scoring in the top of the first, after Liam Peterson drew a bases loaded walk with just one out. The Polars would swing the momentum in the opposite direction to end the inning though, striking out consecutive batters to harness the threat.

Drew Hedtke got the start on the mound for the Vikings in this one and squashed any signs of momentum, working around a hit in the first inning to keep things at 1-0 after an inning.

Eli Fest would then double in his first at-bat of the season in the second, before a Matt Verdugo single brought him around to score. Another walk would load the bases for Bethany with Nolan Spence being the beneficiary of a bases loaded walk to bring in the game's third run, before a Peterson sac fly made things 4-0 headed to the bottom of the second.

Hedtke would work around another hit in the bottom of the second for a scoreless frame, before Malachi Santiago and Will Carlson would each double to open the third and make things 5-0.

After consecutive 1-2-3 innings in both the third and fourth from Hedtke, the Vikings would put a stamp on the game in the fifth. Three straight RBI singles from Aidan Russell, Spence and Peterson would make things 8-0, before a 2-RBI single from Santiago pushed their lead to 10.

They would continue the offensive outburst in the sixth, as pair of walks put two runners on. Consecutive doubles from Russell and Spence each brought in a run before Peterson drove a line drive over the center field fence to make the score 14-0.

Hedtke would put the Polars down 1-2-3 in the sixth, before they would scratch their first run across in the seventh thanks to a couple singles, but a strikeout would end the game via the 10-run rule and secure the win.

Verdugo and Spence each had three hits in the contest for Bethany, while Russell, Peterson, and Santiago added two.

Hedtke stymied one of the top hitting teams in the UMAC in seven innings of work, spreading out seven hits and striking out eight for the complete game victory.

The two teams will be back at it tomorrow when they play a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
