Softball Drops UMAC Matchup with Minnesota Morris

MORRIS, Minn. - The Bethany Lutheran softball team traveled to Minnesota Morris for a single contest on Tuesday morning and fell by a score of 3-1. With the loss the Vikings fall to 23-11 and 11-2 in the conference while the Cougars move to 25-10 overall and 12-1 in the UMAC.

After a scoreless first inning it was Bethany who struck first as they would get doubles from Haley Stockman and Emily Nelson in the top of the second to put them up 1-0.

Morris would then threaten in the bottom half as they would get runners to second and third with two outs, but after a wild pitch would get the backstop Brynja Mielke would quickly get to it as the Vikings were able to cut down the runner trying to score to keep the 1-0 lead.

Things would then stay scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning when the Cougars would finally break through. A walk and a double would get a pair of runners on base before an error would allow a run to score and leave two on base. With runners still on second and third, a fielders choice would allow both runners to advance and make the score 2-1 before a bunt brought in the third run of the inning to give Morris the 3-1 lead after four innings.

In the games final three innings, a two-out hit from Katelyn Halbach in the fifth would be the only Bethany baserunner as the Cougars were able to hold on for the win.

The Vikings out-hit the Cougars 5-4 in the contest with Stockman being the only player with multiple hits as she had two.

Kayla Senne took the loss in the circle, tossing six innings and allowing one earned run while striking out seven.

The two teams will be back at it tomorrow in Morris when they begin a doubleheader at 1:30 p.m.
