Softball Shuts Out UW-Superior

MANKATO, Minn. - The Bethany Lutheran softball team hosted UW-Superior on Friday afternoon and defeated the Yellowjackets 8-0 in five innings. With the win the Vikings move to 26-11 overall and 14-2 in the UMAC while UWS falls to 22-12 overall and 11-5 in the conference.

After a 1-2-3 top of the first inning from Kayla Senne in the circle, the Viking offense would give her some run support right away in the bottom half.

Sydney Jacobs would get a base hit to lead off the inning before the Jackets defense allowed two more runners to reach to load the bases. Haley Stockman would rip a one-out single to score two runners before Ana Christofferson followed that with a single that scored a run, with a UWS error allowing Stockman to score all the way from first on the play and Christofferson to get to third. An RBI groundout from Emily Nelson would then make the score 5-0 after an inning of play.

Bethany would add two more runs in the bottom of the second inning, with Jacobs and Katelyn Halbach singling back-to-back to put runners on the corners. Halbach would then takeoff to steal second, with the throwing sailing into center field to allow Jacobs to score. Emily Doyle would then single down the right field line to bring Doyle in and make the score 7-0.

The game then moved quickly as neither team could really get much going over the next few innings. It wasn't until the bottom of the fifth that Bethany would put the game away, as Kaija Mork would double to right field and eventually come around to score on a Stockman single to give the Vikings their eighth run and win via the eight-run rule.

Jacobs and Stockman led Bethany with two hits apiece with Stockman driving in three runs.

Senne was once again tough in the circle, allowing just one hit in the matchup and striking out four hitters for the win.

The two teams will each play their final two contests before the UMAC Tournament tomorrow when they face off in Mankato at 12 p.m.
