Hear from the Vikings
Here's what Bethany senior outfielder
Josh Robb and game one starting pitcher
Adryen Tietz had to say about the games
Robb: "Great two wins today with everyone on the team playing a role was awesome to see! Really happy with our pitching staff as well for keeping us in the game and letting us put runs on the board for them. Really excited to see what this team can accomplish for the rest of the season."
Tietz: "Today was a great couple of team wins! Offensively and defensively we all did our part, but there are things that we can still work on and get better at. This weekend was a great way to open conference play."
Inside the Box ScoresÂ
Bethany Lutheran 7 - 1 Martin Luther
After Tietz tossed a scoreless top of the first, the Vikings would put their first run on the board in the bottom half as
Eli Fest would double to open the inning before coming around to score on an
Aidan Russell base hit.Â
Robb would single to open the second and score on a
Seth Jones double to right center with Tietz tossing scoreless third and fourth innings to keep it at 2-0. Robb would once again single in the fourth and a Knight error would help him around to score as the Vikings led 3-0.Â
After Tietz posted a 1-2-3 fifth with two strikeouts, Bethany would add three more in the third. A pair of Knight errors would allow one run to cross before a Jones triple with two runners on brought in both to make it 6-0.
The Vikings would get their final run of the contest in the eighth as
Will Carlson tripled and scored on a Fest sac fly before the Knights would push across an unearned run in the ninth to bring the game to its final of 7-1.Â
Robb and Jones led the Vikings at the plate in this one, with Robb tallying three hits and three runs scored while Jones added three hits and three RBI.Â
Tietz earned the win on the mound, striking out 10 and allowing no runs in seven innings of work for the Vikings.Â
Bethany Lutheran 12 - 2 Martin Luther (8 innings)
After a 1-2-3 top of the first from
Sean Gamble on the hill for the Vikings, Bethany would give him some early run support in the bottom half. It was a Russell RBI double that got the scoring started for the Vikings to bring one run across before
Nolan Spence would knock a single to bring in another for the early 2-0 lead.Â
The two teams would then cruise through the next few innings before the Vikings exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the fourth. They would piece together six hits in the frame and add in three free passes to put up eight runs and gain the 10-0 advantage. Fest had a 2-RBI double to open the scoring before
Gary Swann brought home two more with a hit.
Xander Meissner then doubled to add two more runs with Spence and Robb rounding out the scoring by driving in one each.Â
Bethany would put together three more hits in the fifth and it was Russell who was the beneficiary as he drove in a pair of runs to make it 12-0 headed to the sixth.Â
MLC would get two unearned runs off Gamble in the top of the sixth inning before he would work around a jam and get a game ending double play in the seventh as the Vikings won via the 10-run rule 12-2.Â
Gamble went the distance in game two, striking out 11 while allowing just four hits and no earned runs in the contest. Four Vikings tallied multiple hits in the game with Spence leading the way as he went 3-for-3 with a pair of RBI.Â
Bethany will next be in action on Tuesday when they host Gustavus for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.Â
