Track & Field Sets More Records at UWRF Winter Classic

RIVER FALLS, Wis. - The Bethany Vikings track & field team continued its indoor season at the UW-River Falls Winter Classic on Saturday. The Vikings managed to extend the streak of meets with a school record to three, as two school records were set.

The Vikings saw several personal records and season bests set throughout the meet. Will Kaesermann was the first athlete to set one of these personal marks on the track with a season best time of 9.61 in the 60-meter hurdles. Immediately following Kaesermann's season-best, Taryn Zellmann and Brandon Kellett both set personal bests in the 60-meter dash. Zellmann ended the race with a time of 8.61 seconds, while Kellett ran a 7.74. Meanwhile, in the field where the Vikings had only two competitors, Nika Pittinger's throw of 9.65 meters set a new record for herself.

Freshman Campbell Amundson's time of 2:20.43 broke the school record in the women's 800-meter run. Right after Amundson's school record was set, fellow freshman Ben Matzke set a new personal record in the men's 800-meter race, where he improved his personal-best time to 2:03.56.

The Vikings then saw two more PRs fall in the 200-meter dash, as Benjamin Halvorson and Carlos De La Vega both improved their indoor personal records in the event. Halvorson did so with a time of 24.37, while De La Vega ran a time of 24.84. The final individual record of the night came from James Younge, as his time of 9:43.37 lowered his PR in the 3000-meter run.

In addition to some individual personal bests and season bests, the Vikings also had two relays set new marks for the year, one of which was a school record. Before the record was set, however, the Vikings women's 4x200-meter relay placed second overall, as the team of Ping, Zellmann, Kedsch, and Hopp ran a time of 1:54.22.

Meanwhile, in the men's race, two teams of Vikings participated. The team of Halvorson, Bolanos Talbot, De La Vega, and Kaesermann came in with a time of 1:39.45, while the team of Koosman, Kellett, Weyiouanna, and Skaden finished with a time of 1:42.68.

The capstone of the night was the mixed 4x400-meter relay as this was the first time ever that the Vikings had competed in the event. The team of Ping, Halvorson, Zellmann, and Koosman were able to set the school record with a time of 4:01.31.

Coach Dominic Santina had this to say about the meet, "Another week of some strong performances and some good improvements. We have been showing a lot of consistency which is good as we prepare for the UMAC Championships in three weeks."

Next, the Vikings will head to Northfield, Minn. for the Carleton Meet of the Hearts next Saturday.
