MANKATO, Minn. - Bethany baseball lost both games of a doubleheader Saturday against UM-Morris, losing 6-5 and 7-4. The Vikings snap their six-game win streak, dropping to 11-4 overall and 3-2 in the UMAC.Â
Bethany 5, UM-Morris 6
After two scoreless innings, Morris hit a two-run double followed by a run-scoring single for a 3-0 lead in the third. Bethany scored its first run in the fourth as Yunior Pena Torres led off with a double and scored on an error.
The Vikings then tied the game in the sixth. A walked and two errors loaded the bases for Vincent Curzie, who was hit by a pitch for a free RBI. Jared Harry then hit a sac fly to tie the game.Â
The Cougars answered immediately in the seventh with an RBI double and a sac fly for a 5-3 lead. Xander Meissner hit his fifth home run of the season in the bottom half to cut the deficit to one, but the Cougars added another run in the eighth on a double steal attempt.Â
The Vikings made things interesting in the bottom of the ninth as Jayden Knutson led off with a triple and scored on a wild pitch, but the visitors got out of the jam to secure the win.Â
Bethany was limited to just five hits from five different players. Aidan Byrd started on the mound and lasted five innings in a no decision. He allowed three runs on six hits with five Ks. Riston Wojcik suffered the loss in 1.1 innings of relief, allowing two runs on three hits. Quentin Holmes tossed the final 2.2 innings, allowing one run on two hits with four punch outs.Â
Bethany 4, UM-Morris 7
The Vikings gained the early advantage with two runs in the first two frames. Pena Torres singled and later scored on a sac fly by Gary Swann. In the second, Seth Jones walked and later scored on a single by Pena Torres.Â
UM-Morris got its first run in the third after a pair of singles and a wild pitch. The Cougars then took the lead for good in the fourth after a three-run homer. The visitors added three runs in the seventh with an RBI double and a pinch hit two-run homer.Â
Max Athmann hit a two-run homer in the eighth, but the score remained 7-4 for a final.Â
Pena Torres was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with a run and an RBI. Nate Hoffman took the mound loss, dropping to 3-1. He allowed three runs on three hits with six Ks in 3.2 innings. Tyson Reger, Ethan Lung, and Drew Hedtke each saw relief innings.Â
Bethany and UM-Morris wrap up the three-game series at noon Sunday.Â
