ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Vikings moved one step closer to a UMAC Tournament title Friday, edging top-seeded Northwestern 1-0 behind Emily Meyer's masterful shutout and Emily Doyle's game-changing first-inning home run.
With the victory, the No. 2-seeded Vikings now sit firmly in the driver's seat in the UMAC postseason bracket. Bethany Lutheran would now need to lose twice to be denied the conference championship, putting the Vikings in prime position as they chase the UMAC crown.
The decisive moment came early when Emily Doyle launched a solo home run in the top of the first inning, giving Bethany Lutheran all the offense it would need in a tightly contested playoff showdown.
From there, Emily Meyer was sensational in the circle. Meyer tossed a complete-game shutout, keeping Northwestern off the scoreboard while repeatedly shutting down scoring threats. She stranded three runners in the third inning, escaped late pressure in the sixth and seventh, and stayed composed throughout one of the Vikings' biggest games of the season.
Bethany Lutheran's defense backed Meyer every step of the way, making key plays in crucial moments to preserve the narrow lead and secure the postseason statement win.
The Vikings' offense may have been limited to one run, but Doyle's blast proved enough as Bethany Lutheran continued its impressive playoff run.
The Vikings' opponent will be University of Northwestern for tomorrow's match up, 5/9. The game will start at noon.
