WAVERLY, Iowa - Bethany men's tennis traveled to Wartburg College on Sunday and defeated the host Knights 5-2 before a 4-3 loss to Grand View University, moving to 2-1 this season.
Against Wartburg, the Vikings started the match by clinching the doubles point with wins at Nos. 1 and 3. Declan Jones and Mark Barton won 6-3 at the top spot, while Daniel Poulakidas and Simao Caetano won 6-2 at No. 3.
In singles play, Jones, Joel Simon, and Barton won in straight sets at the top three spots, while Poulakidas won in a breaker at No. 6, 2-6, 6-2, 13-11.
Against Grand View, the other Vikings earned the doubles point with wins at Nos. 2 and 3. Jones and Barton won 6-2 at No. 1. Singles play was split in half, but the doubles point put Grand View over the edge.
Simon and Barton won in three sets at Nos. 2 and 3, respectively, while Jose Solorzano won 7-5, 6-2 at No. 4.
Bethany is back in action Sunday at home against Concordia-Moorhead.
