MANKATO, Minn. - Bethany tennis opened its fall season Saturday at home against Saint Mary's with the men winning 6-1 and the women losing by the same mark.
The men started the day by sweeping doubles play. Declan Jones and Mark Barton won 7-5 at No. 1, Joel Simon and Pepe Coiras also won 7-5 at No. 2, and Simao Caetano and Daniel Poulakidas won 6-3 at No. 3.Â
In singles action, Jones won 6-1, 6-1 at the top spot, Simon won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2, Barton won in three sets 6-1, 6-7 (8-10), 14-12 at No. 4, Coiras won 6-4, 6-3 at No. 5, and Poulakidas wrapped up the sixth spot with a 6-1, 6-0 win.Â
In the women's match, the Cardinals swept doubles for the first point and then took five of the six singles. Anea Simunovic claimed the lone Bethany point at No. 1 with a 6-0, 7-6 (7-3) decision.Â
The Viking men hit the road tomorrow for two non-conference matches in Waverly, Iowa against Wartburg and Grand View, while the women's next match is Saturday against UW-Stout.Â
