Vikings finish 2-2 at Bethany Lutheran Invitational

Mankato, Minn. - The Bethany Volleyball team went 2-2 at the Bethany Lutheran Invitational this weekend.

Friday afternoon, the Vikings came out ready to take on UW-LaCrosse. Bethany came out strong, winning the first game, but the squad was unable to keep up in the last three sets, losing the first match for the weekend. Vanessa Harkins (LeCenter, Minn./LeCenter) led the team with ten kills, followed by Emily Schrupp (Norwood, Minn./Mayer Lutheran) with eight. Libero Tayler Kahlow (LeSueur, Minn./LeSueur) added 15 digs for the Vikings.

Saturday morning, the Vikings came out, fired up and ready to play, to take their first match against Milwaukee School of Engineering. The girls took the first two games with ease, then kept spectators on the edge of their seats when the third game went all the way to the end, winning 31-29. Laura Holt (Mapleton, Minn./Maple River) played a major role against the Raiders, playing a great offensive game at the net, with her blocking and scoring nine kills for Bethany. The Vikings also picked up their serving game, with ten aces in the match.

The Vikings next took on Coe from Iowa. The first game was back and forth; point for point the whole game, ending in a 30-28 victory for Coe. Schrupp led the team with 12 kills and Holt with ten. Nicole Jones (North Mankato, Minn./Mankato East) added 33 assists, but the Vikings were only able to pull out one win against the Kohawks, losing the match.

The last game of the night, Bethany once again proved they could beat Presentation. The Vikings won all three games. Amanda Edminson (Mayer, Minn./Watertown-Mayer) and Meghan Houlihan (Elysian, Minn./WEM) led the team with ten and seven kills, and Kahlow added five ace serves and 19 digs.

Schrupp and Harkins were both recognized for their work on the court and selected for the All-Tournament Team.

The Vikings will be in action once again this Friday at Gustavus Adolphus.
