Ft. Myers, Fla. – The Viking softball team was able to finish their spring trip with a win today against Rockford. Bethany Lutheran won 7-3. The second game of the day scheduled against Wilmington was cancelled due to weather.
The Vikings were down three runs until the third inning when Kathryn Nieman (Clear Lake, Iowa/Clear Lake) singled to second base, followed by a walk. Shannon Grimmer (Woodbury, Minn./Hill-Murray) advanced the two runners with a sacrifice bunt. Jaimee Goebel (Danvers, Ill./Olympia) singled down the right field line to bat in both Vikings on base. One more run was scored when Nieman advanced to second on a wild pitch allowing Amanda Edmison (Mayer, Minn./Watertown-Mayer) to bat her in when she singled to right field.
After tying the game another wild pitch gave the Vikings a run, and the lead 4-3. Some insurance came in the sixth when Jonnica Norell (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter) singled to right field followed by a sacrifice bunt to advance her to second. Emily Rauchman (Mankato, Minn./Mankato West) doubled to right center to bat in Norell. Gena Chester (Mankato, Minn./Mankato West) singled to get on base and Grimmer then doubled to right center for two more runs crossing home plate.
Nieman and Edmison split time on the mound. Nieman started out pitching two innings walking five and allowing three runs. Edmison pitched the other five innings allowing three hits, no runs, and striking out two.
The Vikings will make their home debut in the next game against Macalester. The doubleheader is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start on March 25.
