Mankato, Minn. – The Viking tennis squads took on Martin Luther in a UMAC match-up. The Bethany Lutheran women lost another close one falling 5-4 to the knights. The men’s team was defeated 9-0.
The women’s number one and number two were able to take their opponent in two sets. Rebecca Kopacek (Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo) took her opponent 6-4, 6-4. Madara Matveja (Riga, Latvia/Riga Secondary) defeated her MLC competitor 7-5, 6-2. Sarah Wagner (Elbow Lake, Minn./West Central Area Secondary) also won her singles match 6-4, 6-1.
The only Vikings team to win in the doubles competition was the duo of Brooke Osmundson (Delavan, Minn./Maple River) and Alyssa Rau (Sarona, Wis./Rice Lake). They defeated their opponents 8-4.
This is the second match in a row the Vikings have lost 5-4.
The Bethany Lutheran men had a tough time against the Martin Luther Knights unable to get a set win during the match.
The Vikings fared better in the doubles competition with Randy Zavala (Worthington, Minn./Worthington) and Felipe Ortega (Worthington, Minn./Worthington) coming close falling 8-5. Peter Londgren (Charlevoix, Mich./Charlevoix) and Nicholas Croy (Tacoma, Wash./Evergreen Lutheran) also fell 8-5.
Next, the Vikings will take on Northwestern in Mankato for a home match starting at 3 p.m. on April 14.
