Close tie breakers make difference in tennis vs. Northwestern

Mankato, Minn. – The tennis teams had a tough time against a stacked Northwestern men’s and women’s team. Both Viking squads suffered a loss against the Eagles.

 

The women managed to get three wins passed Northwestern, two of which came in the doubles competition. Rebecca Kopacek (Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo) and Madara Matveja (Riga, Latvia/Riga Secondary) won with a score of 9-7. Bethany Lutheran’s three and four of Brooke Osmundson (Delavan, Minn./Maple River) and Sarah Wagner (Elbow Lake, Minn./West Central Area Secondary) defeated Northwestern 8-5.

 

In the singles competition Wagner was the only Viking to take down her opponent, she won 4-6, 6-4, 10-6. Matveja came so close losing the tie breaker in a all out battle 13-15. Kopacek also came close falling to her competitor 6-4, 6-4.

 

The men had a tougher time than the women unable to win a set. Ben Schroeder (Minneapolis, Minn./Dakota County CC) had the best appearance for the Vikings falling 6-2, 6-1.

 

Bethany Lutheran men and women will travel to Duluth this weekend to take on St. Scholastica. The match is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. on April 16.
