Mankato, Minn. – The men’s soccer team won a nail-biter against the Martin Luther Knights 2-1. The win currently puts the Vikings in third place in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC). A top four finish would secure a spot into the post-season tournament.
Martin Luther scored at the 38:46 mark to give the Knights a 1-0 lead going into halftime. It wasn’t until the 70th minute that Bethany would tie the game. Joseph Perez (Colorado Springs, Colo. / Fountain Ft. Carson) found the back of the net assisted by Jacob Behmer (Maple Grove, Minn. / West Lutheran). It was Perez’s seventh goal of the season. The game looked destined for overtime until freshman Jason Buechler (Kasson, Minn. / Kasson-Mantorville) scored with less than three minutes to play. His goal was assisted by fellow freshman Benjamin Moldstad (North Mankato, Minn. / Minnesota Valley Lutheran).
Ryan Bolte (Colorado Springs, Colo. / Fountain Fort Carson) played between the pipes for the Vikings. He recorded three saves.
Martin Luther outshot the Vikings 18 to 15, but the Vikings had more shots on goal with seven while the Knights had four. Both teams took seven corner kicks each.
Bethany is 7-8-1 overall and 6-3-1 in the conference. Next, the Vikings will travel to Northwestern for a game on October 19th starting at 1 p.m.
