Box Score MANKATO, Minn. - The Bethany Lutheran College Vikings took on the University of Northwestern Eagles in a matchup of two teams who have already qualified for the UMAC postseason tournament and it was an emotional rollercoaster of a contest for both teams. The Vikings overcame a 2-0 deficit in the closing minutes, only to have the Eagles pull off a 3-2 win in overtime.
Northwestern got on the board with a goal from Sean Taylor in the 15th minute for the early 1-0 lead. Both teams were silent for the remainder of the first half, but the Eagles added to the lead with a 25-foot shot into the left corner of the goal from Matt Flanders to go up 2-0. It appeared that the Eagles were going to walk away with a shutout win until BLC sophomore
Ryan Behmer connected for a goal in the 83rd minute to cut the lead in half. Only 45 seconds later, Bethany's freshman forward
Laye Kaba connected for a goal from 15 yards out to tie the game at two goals apiece.
All the momentum was rolling in the Vikings favor as the game headed into overtime. With less than a minute remaining in the first overtime, however, Joshua Fryc was able to convert on the game-winner with a goal off a corner kick to seal the 3-2 victory for Northwestern.
The Vikings' next matchup is against North Central University at 2:15 p.m. Saturday for their last home contest of the season.
