Box Score 2 Fort Myers, Fla. - So far in this early season, Bethany has a knack for late inning heroics. Wednesday in Fort Myers, Fla. was no different as the Vikings came back in both games to force extra innings as they split a pair of contests.
Bethany fell behind 6-1 to Bridgewater State (Mass.) after three innings on Wednesday before mounting their first comeback of the day. The Vikings used the help of small ball and Bridgewater errors to score four runs in the fourth inning to pull within one. Ashley Jensen walked and both Nicole Starkson and Kelsey Pekarna singled to load the bases with one out. After a strike out, Angela Timm reached on an error by third baseman Meagan Pacheco that scored Jensen and Starkson. Pacheco committed another throwing error this time off the bat of Shannon Heitz, scoring Timm. She latered scored from home on a double steal to complete the four-run rally.
After a rough start, Heitz settled down and didn't allow a run after the third. Bethany tied the game in the sixth after another BSU error scored Starkson.
The game went to extra innings and Heitz retired BSU 1-2-3 in the top of the eighth. Extra innings were played with international rules, meaning each half inning starts with a runner on second base. Pekarna started on second, was moved over to third on a Rebecca Ludewig sacrifice bunt and then scored the winning run on an Angela Timm sacrifice fly to center.
In the second game, against St. Mary's (IND), the Vikings waited to get on the scoreboard until the seventh inning as they mounted their second comeback of the game. St. Mary's scored one run in each of the first two innings and took a 2-0 lead into the seventh.
Jensen reached on an error to start the bottom of the seventh for Bethany. After a strike out, Starkson singled and later stole second, placing Jensen on third. With the tying runs in scoring position, Pekarna looped a double down the right field line, scoring both Jensen and Starkson. Ludewig then singled moving Pekarna, the potential winning run, to third with one out. Timm and Andrea Donley would strike out though to end the inning.
St. Mary's scored three in the top of the eighth. Bethany countered with one in the bottom half, but would score no more as they fell 5-3.
