Softballers sweep Macalester

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Minneapolis, Minn. - The Bethany 2013 softball squad played late into the night to get its first victories of the season. In a doubleheader that began at 10 p.m., the Vikings swept Macalester 10-3 and 5-3 at the Augsburg Dome late Friday night/early Saturday morning.

Bethany's bats were relatively quite in the first game until the fifth inning. Trailing 3-1, the Vikings erupted for five in the fifth to take advantage of the game. With two runners on, Nicole Starkson doubled to left scoring Ashley Jensen. Amanna Berthusen scored on a fielder's choice to tie it at three; Starkson scored on a throwing error; Andrea Donley hit an RBI single to center scoring Rebecca Ludewig and Angela Timm stole home on a double steal as the Vikings took a 6-3 lead.

Bethany would score four more insurance runs over the last two innings as Bethany took Game 1, 10-3. Jensen, Starkson, Kelsey Pekarna, and Gena Chester each had two hits apiece as the Vikings got ten hits. Starkson went the distance getting the win on the mound, striking out six along the way.

In Game 2, Bethany's bats continued to be on fire as they scored three first inning runs. Chester got on the board first when Jensen hit an RBI infield single, Starkson hit a sacrifice fly to center scoring Aimie Wiechmann and Jensen crossed the plate on a throwing error.

Starkson and Chester would add extra base hit RBIs in the third and fourth to help Bethany to a 5-3 Game 2 win.

Bethany (2-2) next travels to Fort Myers, Fla. for a weeks worth of spring training games. They'll start out playing Elms College next Sunday at 9 a.m.
