Box Score 2 Rosemount, Minn. - The Bethany softball team did something they haven't done since 2008. . . beat St. Scholastica. After a tough 3-1 loss in the first game at the Irish Sports Dome Sunday night, the Vikings made some noise with their bats outscoring the Saints 10-8 in the night cap.
The second game didn't start out the best for Bethany after giving up three first inning run. But by the end of the third, the Vikings had built a 3-run lead with the help of a 5-run third. With the bases loaded, Kelsey Pekarna delivered the first run-producing hit of the frame with an RBI single to left scoring Ashley Jensen. Rebecca Ludewig then knocked in a pair (Amanna Berthusen and Nicole Starkson) with a 2-RBI single up the middle. Pekarna and Ludewig both scored from a throwing error from the St. Scholastica shortstop putting the Vikings up 7-4.
Bethany added three more in the fourth. Starkson knocked in Jensen with an RBI double to left. Pekarna brought Berthusen home with an infield single and Ludewig hit a sacrifice fly to center scoring Starkson making the score 10-4 after four.
St. Scholastica battled back to make it 10-8 in the sixth inning. Starkson, the tough luck loser in Game 1, was brought in to pitch to try to get them out of a tight spot. With two outs, Starkson faced Molly Jazdzewski of St. Scholastica who had already belted a pair of 3-run home runs in the game. Two runners were on base again for Jazdzewski, but Starkson was able to strike her out to end the threat.
Starkson struck out the side in the seventh to record the save and to preserve the big win.
The win moves Bethany to 6-1 in the UMAC and they currently sit alone at top of the standings. Keep tuned to this website, facebook, and twitter for updates on the Vikings schedule this week. Monday's doubleheader at Minn.-Morris has already been postponed.
