Win over Northland highlights UMAC crossover

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 New Ulm, Minn. - The Bethany softball squad played their 23rd and 24th games of the 2013 season in Minnesota on Friday. For only the fifth and sixth times the games were played outdoors. Playing on the campus of Martin Luther College, the Vikings beat Northland College for the third time this season in the first game 3-1, then fell to St. Scholastica in the second game 4-2.

Bethany got all the runs they needed in the first inning. Gena Chester doubled to lead off the game. Two batters later, Kelsey Pekarna brought her home with an RBI single. Nicole Starkson then singled and scored two batters later when Rebecca Ludewig hit an RBI single.

Shannon Heitz pitched well on the mound to pick up her ninth win of the season. She only allowed two hits and struck out nine in the complete game victory.

Chester, Pekarna, and Heitz all had two hits in the 11-hit attack for the Vikings. Angela Timm added an RBI double in the sixth.

Against the Saints, Bethany scored again in the top of the first. Amanna Berthusen hit a sacrifice fly to score Chester.

St. Scholastica evened the game in the fourth and in the fifth, Tiff Hudack hit a big 2-rbi double to give the Saints a 3-1 lead.

The Vikings got a run in the seventh and later had the game-tying runs on base, but a line out to short ended the game.

Bethany (18-14, 11-4 in UMAC) has more UMAC Crossover action on Saturday on the campus of MLC. They face North Central at 10 am and Northwestern at 2 pm.
