Volleyball squad drops season opening pair in Northfield

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 NORTHFIELD, Minn. - The 2013-14 Bethany Vikings sports season got underway Friday afternoon in Northfield, Minn. as the volleyball team began play at the St. Olaf/Carleton Invitational.

Optimism and anticipation surrounds the team this season as the squad is led by first year head coach John Olmanson. Bethany fans have to wait a while to see the new era of Vikings' volleyball as their first 15 matches are away from the Sports and Fitness Center.

Their first two games of 2013 where against MIAC opponents St. Olaf and Carleton. MIAC opponents have always proven to be tough and that was no different Friday as Bethany dropped both matches three sets to none.

The Oles stopped Bethany 25-16, 25-17, 25-19 in the first match of the day. Amanna Berthusen led Bethany with nine kills. Emily Franzen added 15 assists and Kasslin Swenson had eight digs.

The Vikings later fell to the Knights 25-23, 25-14, 25-16. Bethany fell behind 14-4 to Carleton in the first set before battling back to tie it at 22. The Knights scored three of the next four points to take the set. Berthusen added nine more kills. Franzen and Miranda Krenske each had 11 assists while Jessi Jurries had ten digs.

The invitational continues Saturday at 10 a.m. when Bethany takes on another MIAC opponent in Macalester. Waldorf awaits for a 2 p.m. contest.
