Two comeback wins for Vikings in home opener

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MANKATO, Minn. - The sixth inning was huge for the Bethany softball Tuesday for their home opening doubleheader against Martin Luther. They scored four times in the sixth inning of game one to pull ahead and four more times in the sixth inning of game two to tie and would eventually win the game in the seventh as the Vikings swept two from the Knights.

Bethany trailed 3-1 going into the bottom of the sixth of game one and scored all four of their runs in the frame with two outs. Nicole Starkson started the rally by drawing a walk. Becca Ludewig singled to left. Amanna Berthusen brought home Starkson with an infield single. Angela Timm tied the game with an RBI single up the middle to score Ludewig on a close play at home. Allison Norton then delivered the go-ahead hit with a single to left scoring both Berthusen and Timm.

Allison Songstad pitched the final two innings in relief to get the win as the Vikings prevailed 5-3.

Game two found the Vikings in a worse position than they were in the first contest trailing 5-1 going into the bottom of the sixth. Ludewig started the frame with an infield single. Berthusen doubled to left center as Ludewig scored all the way from first. Timm walked and Norton singled to load the bases with no outs. Amanda Sletten walked and Adria Dahlke singled up the middle to bring home two more runs. Gena Chester hit a sacrifice fly to left to score pinch-runner Trina Nett to tie the game at five. A double-play line out ended the rally.

Shannon Heitz held Martin Luther scoreless in the top of the seventh. Starkson walked to lead off the bottom half and advanced to second on a wild pitch and then to third on a throwing error. Two batters later, Berthusen delivered the game-winner with a single through the left side to score Starkson and give the Vikings their second come-from-behind win of the day 6-5.

Berthusen went 3-for-4 in the nightcap.

Bethany remains at home to take on North Central for a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
