NEW ULM, Minn. - The Bethany men's tennis team set a new program record with their third straight win in its prior match against Minn.-Morris. Tuesday versus Martin Luther, the Vikings extended that streak and also set a new mark for most wins in a season as they squeaked by the Knights 5-4.
The previous mark for wins was set in 2009 when the Vikings won four. Tuesday's win was their fifth of the season as they moved to 5-2 in UMAC play.
BLC and MLC were tied following the six singles competitions with
Jacob Kubler (No. 1),
Troy Hoyord (No. 3), and
Zach Carlson (No. 5) coming out victorius; Kubler and Carlson won their matches in straight sets.
Bethany needed wins two of the three doubles matches to get the overall victory and that's what they got. At No. 1 doubles, Kubler and
Ryan Koch won their match 8-3 and at No. 2 doubles, Hoyord and
Jason Buechler picked up a 9-7 win.
The women came up short against the Knights falling 7-2.
Marissa Teems was the bright spot for Bethany winning both her matches. She defeated Jacqueline Keller 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 singles and teamed with
Morgan Schwartz to beat Keller and Carissa Kock 9-8.
Both teams are off now until April 25 when they host Northwestern at 4 p.m.
