A huge rally and a no-no headlines Bethany's day at the dome

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WEST ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Bethany softball team had an eventful and successful day at the Cobber Round Robin Tournament at the West St. Paul Dome Thursday. The Vikings used a huge seventh inning rally to win the opener and then a masterful mound performance to take the nightcap.

Against Northwestern, Bethany had runners on base in five of their first six innings, but weren't able to muster any runs. The Eagles took a 3-0 lead going into the bottom of the seventh. Rachel Kurtenbach started the rally with a one-out double down the left field line. Aimie Wiechmann followed with a single to left; an error allowed Wiechmann to advance to second and allowed Kurtenback to score the first run. Dani Emkes singled to center to move Wiechmann to third. Katy Snyder's infield single drove in Wiechmann to make the score 3-2. Emkes and Snyder each moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. After a line out, Bethany was down to their final out. Desi Becker reached on a grounder to the right side allowing Emkes to score the tying run. Snyder didn't stop running around third as Northwestern threw to try to get Becker out at first and scored the game winner.

Wiechmann, Becker, and Kurtenbach each had a pair of hits in the 4-3 win.

Against Finlandia, the drama was based around if Anna Pipenhagen would pitch her first collegiate no-hitter. She struck out the side in the top of the first and Bethany would get the only run she needed in the bottom half. Wiechmann reached on an error to lead off and would score two batters later on another Finlandia error to put Bethany up 1-0.

The Vikings added a run in the fourth. Pipenhagen helped her own cause with a hard grounder that went under the glove of the Finlandia second base and allowed Cindy Pawlitschek to score from second to give BLC a 2-0 advantage.

On the mound, Pipenhagen wasn't just flirting with a no-hitter, but seemed paved for a perfect game. She nine strikeouts through four innings. In the fifth, the Lions had two well-hit balls, but both found Bethany gloves on line-outs. After a strikeout to lead the sixth, the perfect game was lost on an error and then a hit batter, but Pipenhagen calmed down to retire the final two batters and retired the Lions in order in seventh to complete the no-hit effort.

This is Bethany's first no-hitter since Shannon Heitz performed the feat against Martin Luther two seasons ago.

Bethany (6-6) is scheduled to play their home opener a week from Saturday against Macalester.
