Vikings fall twice in late innings

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MANKATO, Minn. - In their home opening softball games, Bethany entertained Martin Luther for a doubleheader in which both games weren't decided until the final inning. Unfortunately for the Vikings, they came up on the wrong end of a pair of one run decisions.

BLC's Anna Pipenhagen and MLC's Kathryn Marquardt were immersed in a pitcher's duel where neither team crossed the plate through six innings. Bethany had their chances to score the game's first run getting a runner to third base in the second, fifth, and sixth innings, but weren't able to score.

Martin Luther was finally able to crack the scoreboard in the seventh scoring the game's lone run of the unearned variety. Pipenhagen struck out 10 allowing just three hits.

Pipenhagen got the Vikings on the right track in the second game as she belted her first home run of the season well over the left field wall in the second inning.

The Knights scored twice in the third to take the lead and once more in the fourth to go up 3-1. In the bottom half, Bethany loaded the bases with no outs. MLC induced a pair of force outs at the plate before Aimie Wiechmann came through with a 2-RBI single through the right side to knot the game at 3.

Bethany took a 4-3 lead in the fifth when Pipenhagen's double to right center scored Cindy Pawlitschek all the way from first.

The Vikings maintained that lead before Martin Luther staged another seventh inning rally by scoring twice to come away with a 5-4 win.

Bethany (6-10, 0-1 in UMAC) next plays Thursday and Friday in the UMAC Crossover event at the West St. Paul Dome.
