Quality Starts and Long Ball Propel Vikings Past Knights

NEW ULM, Minn. – On Tuesday, the Bethany baseball team traveled to Martin Luther to take on the Knights in an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference doubleheader. The Vikings earned a sweep of the Knights at the MLC Baseball Field.

Bethany improves to 4-12 overall and 2-2 in UMAC play this season.

Game One: Bethany Lutheran 11, Martin Luther 3
The Vikings got a quality start on the mound by Brandyn Olsen (Blue Earth, Minn.) in game one of the double header to propel the Vikings to their first conference victory of the season. The junior struck out six batters on his way to the complete game victory.

Offensively, Alek Zentzis (Forest Lake, Minn.) and Nolan Grose (Waterville, Minn.) collected two hits apiece in game one. The highlight of the game came in the top of the sixth inning as Nick Caldeen (Blaine, Minn.) sent a shot over the left field fence for a three run home run, putting the Vikings ahead 7-3. Bethany recorded nine hits to earn an 11-3 victory over the Knights.

Game Two: Bethany Lutheran 22, Martin Luther 0
The success in game one carried over to game two of the DH against Martin Luther.  For the second time this season, the Vikings hit back-to-back-to-back home runs against the Knights. Brandyn Olsen, Nick Caldeen, and Drew Quame (Eagle Lake, Minn.) highlighted the top of the first inning with their round-trippers. Olsen finished the game with two home runs and three RBI's while Zentzis added a home run and four RBIs for Bethany.

Ricky Blu Quattlebaum (Roy, Utah), Neil Eichten (Wabasso, Minn.), and Nolan Grose each had a pair of RBIs. The Vikings lineup scattered 19 hits on the afternoon.

Freshman Anthony Radloff (Green Bay, Wis.) got the start on the mound, earning his second victory of the season. The left-hander pitched the game's first six innings, fanning five batters while only surrendering two hits.

***The Vikings have hit a total of 16 home runs this season, which currently ranks sixth in the Bethany record books for most home runs in a single season.
