MANKATO, Minn. – The Bethany men's soccer team (1-11-2, 0-7-2) hosted Northland College (2-9-2, 1-5-2) in UMAC action on a wet Saturday afternoon. The Vikings and Jacks gave their full effort today for 110 minutes and ended the game with a 0-0 tie.
A quick look at the stats shows that the Vikings held a significant advantage in total shots. BLC racked up 15 shots compared to 8 for the Jacks. The Vikings totaled three shots on goal while the Jacks had two.
The Vikings certainly felt like the more aggressive team in the first half, dominating offensive possession of the ball for the majority of the 45 minutes. The Vikings peppered Northland goalie Thomas Whiting with shots from freshman midfielder Vincent Ayodi, senior forward Broderick Brown, and junior midfielder Chan Park. The Vikings racked up six shots and two corner kicks in the first half, but the two teams entered halftime tied 0-0.
In the second half, it was the Jacks who had the momentum early, racking up a few shots in the first 10 minutes. Two of those shots were directly on goal and Viking goalkeeper Ryan Lietz came up with a couple nice saves. The Vikings settled in and Logan Boyer, Samuel Duran, and Wesley Shade had their shot attempts, but still nothing was able to find the back of the net. The two teams continued to play hard until the end of regulation with the score still tied 0-0.
The first overtime was a lot of back and forth except for two shots from the Vikings. Freshman midfielder Jakob Burgess had a shot sail high over the crossbar and junior forward Meles Abraha missed left. The Vikings and Jacks headed to a second overtime after ten more minutes of scoreless play.
The last ten minutes of play proved to be like the first 100 minutes as both teams had their shots, but neither team could score. Sophomore goalkeeper Ryan Lietz played a total of 220 minutes in net this week for the Vikings. Today, he made two saves. Northland goalkeeper Thomas Whiting made three saves on the day for the Jacks.
Up Next: The Vikings travel to Crown on Tuesday, October 17 for another UMAC contest. The men's game is set to begin at 7:15 PM.
