MANKATO, Minn. – The Bethany women's soccer team (5-9, 4-5) hosted Northland (4-7-3, 2-3-3) on a wet and cloudy afternoon on Saturday. Despite the gloomy weather, both teams showed up ready to play.
The majority of the first half went back and forth with each team collecting a couple shots and tries on goal. In the 29th minute, the Vikings took advantage of a long run by senior midfielder Nicole Moldstad which ended with a nice pass to freshman forward Madison Perry. Perry took the pass from Moldstad and put a shot on goal that went through the keeper's hands and to the back of the net to give the Vikings a 1-0 lead. The Moldstad to Perry connection has been key as Perry scored three goals in the Vikings win over North Central on Wednesday and all three of those goals were assisted by Moldstad.
Northland continued to fight, down 1-0, and their hard work paid off in the 43rd minute when Shona Aird picked up a deflected ball in the box to score for the Jills. Two minutes went by and the Vikings and Jills went into halftime tied 1-1.
As the rain continued to come and go in the second half, the two teams played back and forth. The Vikings and the Jills each had opportunities in the second half, but neither team was able to score any goals, sending the game into overtime.
The time ticked by in the extra period and with less than a minute to go it seemed like the two teams were headed to a second overtime, but a break came for the Vikings with the ball in Nicole Moldstad's possession. Moldstad dribbled up the field and delivered a great pass to none other than Madison Perry who scored the game winning goal with 29 seconds left on the clock.
The bench cleared for the Vikings and the celebration began as they took home a 2-1 victory in overtime.
Freshman forward Madison Perry scored both goals in the win which gives her five goals this week. Senior captain Nicole Moldstad collected two assists in the game giving her a total of five assists this week. Freshmen keeper Mindy Meske got her first start of the season in net and made eight saves in the win for the Vikings.
Up Next: The Vikings travel to Crown on Tuesday, October 17. The women's game begins at 5 PM.
