Vikings Roll Past Northland, Fall to Buena Vista

MANKATO, Minn. – The Bethany Vikings (9-15, 5-7) continued their playoff push with the first of two games starting with Northland College (6-15, 3-9). The Vikings won 3-0 (26-24, 25-13, 25-23) to start the afternoon.

The Vikings and Jills played very close, back-and-forth volleyball all day with the Vikings coming on top in the end. The Jills had a 24-23 lead in the first set with a chance to close, but the Vikings won three points in a row to take the set.

The Vikings used a 10-4 run to seal a dominant second set, with great hits by senior Rachel Sorensen and sophomore Megan Rutt.

Rutt powered her way to 15 kills, helping the Vikings to a 44-27 advantage in that category.

In match two, the Bethany Vikings (9-16, 5-7) fell to Buena Vista University (16-9, 4-3) in their second match of the day, a non-conference match. BLC lost 3-0 in a hard-fought match (14-25, 21-25, 17-25).

The Beavers relied on two of their best hitters to propel them to the sweep. Senior Jade Schaap finished with 19 kills and senior Ali Grein finished with 11 kills. Every time the Vikings got within a couple of points the Beavers pulled away.

The Vikings were led in kills by senior Alannah Menk with 10. Senior Jessica Grimsley played an all-around good game with one kill, two assists, and 10 digs.

Up Next: The Vikings go back to UMAC play at Crown on Tuesday, Oct. 17 in St. Bonifacius starting at 7 PM.
