NEW ULM, Minn. – The Vikings volleyball team (10-19, 6-9) lost their final road-match of the season to Martin Luther (15-15, 10-5) in a five-set thriller. The Vikings found themselves down 0-2 after the first two sets, but battled back to even the score at 2-2, only to lose in the fifth set. The set scores were 20-25, 20-25, 25-23, 25-10, 14-16.
The Vikings came ready to play and hung tough with the Knights in the first two sets, but they couldn't get over the hump losing both sets 25-20.
The Vikings found their stride in the third set, taking an early 12-6 lead. Martin Luther battled back to retake the lead at 19-17, but the Vikings didn't quit and put together a nice run and won the third set by a score of 25-23.
The fourth set was all Vikings. The Vikings demolished the Knights in the fourth set, winning the first nine points. The Knights never even got close in the fourth set and the Vikings won by a score of 25-10.
The momentum continued for the Vikings in the fifth and final set as they grabbed an early 11-4 lead. The Knights won three straight points to make the score 11-7 in favor of the Vikings, but the Vikings countered with a three-point run of their own to take a commanding 14-7 lead. It appeared that the Vikings would close out the set and win the match, but Martin Luther won nine straight points to steal the win away from the Vikings by a fifth set score of 16-14.
Megan Rutt led the Vikings with 24 kills. Alannah Menk added 12 and Natasha Young had six. Jasmine Carlson dished out 40 assists for the Vikings and Anna Nelson had 22 digs. Jasmine Carlson also had 15 digs for the Vikings.
Up Next: The Vikings will conclude their season on Saturday, October 28 when they host Northwestern at 7 PM.
