Vikings and Knights Split Non-Conference Doubleheader

NEW ULM, Minn. – The Bethany Lutheran softball team returned to the field for the first time in 12 days on Tuesday afternoon. The Vikings split a non-conference doubleheader against the Knights from Martin Luther.

The Basics:
  • Final Scores:
    • Game one: Bethany Lutheran 2, Martin Luther 1
    • Game two: Knights 7, Vikings 1
  • Location: MLC Softball Field
  • Overall Record: BLC 6-14, MLC 6-7

GAME ONE:
In the top half of the second inning, the Vikings pulled off a double steal to score Cindy Pawlitschek (St. Paul, Minn.) to take a 1-0 lead. BLC would add a run off an error by MLC in the top of the fourth inning. That would be all the run support junior Anna Pipenhagen (Elk River, Minn.) would need in the non-conference win over Martin Luther. The right-handed pitcher threw all seven innings, giving up just three hits while fanning 13 batters.

Offensively, Head Coach Dan Nessler and his 2017 Vikings totaled seven hits compared to the Knights three. Leading the way was freshman Katelyn Karels (St. Clair, Minn.) with two singles. Pipenhagen and Pawlitschek each had a double in the efforts over MLC.

GAME TWO:
The second game was a different story, as the Knights out-hit the Vikings 10 to seven to salvage the split in New Ulm. The Knights scored six runs within the first three innings of the contest compared to the Vikings lone run in the top of the third. Karels and Pipenhagen continued to swing the bat well, finishing with two hits apiece. Bethany Lutheran left 10 runners on base in game two.
