MANKATO, Minn. – The Bethany men's soccer team (1-5) came up a little bit short against Bethel University (3-4-1) in non-conference play on Tuesday night. After 90 minutes the two teams were tied at 2-2, but it was Bethel who would take advantage of the extra time to take home a 3-2 win in overtime.
The Vikings took an early lead with a beautiful header goal by Samuel Duran at 17:19, assisted with a great pass from Chan Park. The Royals responded at 26:22 with a goal by Kevin Hintz and the two teams went into halftime tied 1-1.
The Royals struck first after the break with a Connor Miller goal, assisted by Gavin Matson. With just over two minutes remaining in the game, Bethany's Jonathan Sehloff found the back of the net off a penalty kick to tie the game 2-2 and force overtime.
The Royals came out and broke the tie just 43 seconds into overtime to take home a 3-2 win. The Royals held the offensive advantage with 28 shots and 16 on goal compared to 10 shots and five on goal for the Vikings. Ryan Lietz played hard for the Vikings in the net and came away with 13 saves.
Up Next: The Vikings look to bounce back against Northland in UMAC play on Saturday, September 23 in Ashland, WI. The game is set to start at 2 PM.
